Brownie Batter Smoothie

Sometimes I think that one of the biggest perks about cooking is that you get to sample a little of everything before it hits the table. I am always tasting, licking, smelling, slurping everything before it gets to the table. (And now you probably never want to come to dinner at my house…)

In fact, that is one of my favorite things about baking. I LOVE to lick the bowl. We do not have children and it grosses my husband out to eat the batter of anything, so I get the entire bowl and spatula to myself. It’s the small things in life that make me happy :)

This breakfast smoothie is like drinking a big glass of smooth and chocolatey brownie batter. But that doesn’t sound so healthy, does it?

Well I kind of forgot to mention to you that this smoothie is made with a secret ingredient…

Yup, you got it right. Those are black beans. Now before you think I’m crazy and close out of this post, just hear me out.

I make some delicious black bean brownies (recipe to come) and everyone loves them. Why? Because something about black beans and chocolate is just so right. The black beans bring out the chocolate flavor. I also add some instant coffee which really boosts the chocolate taste, and you get your daily cup of coffee all in one cup!

For those of you who still aren’t convinced, I did some research of the health benefits of black beans. Did you know that black beans are high in protein and fiber? They are good for your digestive tract, blood sugar regulation, cardiovascular health, helps to decreases inflammation, contains 8 different flavonoids to prevent cancer, and support the nervous system.

It seems like black beans pack a lot of nutrition and they taste delicious in the breakfast smoothie. Drinking this secretly healthy Brownie Batter Smoothie seems to be a great way to start your day the healthy way while indulging in some chocolate!

Brownie Batter Smoothie
 
Serves: 1
Ingredients
  • 1 cup almond milk
  • ¼ cup black beans, drained and rinsed
  • 1 tablespoon cocoa powder
  • 1 tablespoon ground flax seed
  • 1 tablespoon honey
  • 1 teaspoon instant coffee granules
  • 1 teaspoon powdered stevia (or just add more honey)
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon vanilla
  • 1 banana
  • ½ cup packed spinach
  • ½ cup crushed ice
Instructions
  1. In your blender, add the almond milk and black beans and blend on high until the beans become smooth.
  2. Add in all other ingredients and blend until well mixed.
  3. Pour into a glass and enjoy a awesome breakfast on the go.
